A valuable learning-by-doing experience in Madrid

Fourteen food bankers from 10 different countries gathered in Madrid on 4-8 June to attend our four-day General Management Training session on "How to manage a Food Bank". The training session was organized by FEBA in collaboration with Federación Española de Bancos de Alimentos and the Madrid Food Bank, and supported by Fondation Carrefour. The objective was to provide new or future food bank managers with a "starter-kit" of basic knowledge about the management of a Food Bank.

This training session addressed the following key topics:

  •        Financial Management and Planning
  •        Food recovery and logistics
  •        Annual in-store food collection
  •        EU funds
  •        Traceability, hygiene and food safety
  •        Brand image and communication
  •        Administration and IT systems

During the four-day session, the participants not only listened to detailed presentations and examples on how to manage a food bank in all of the above areas, but also had the possibility to visit MercaMadrid, the biggest food distribution centre in Spain, as well as the Madrid Food Bank and a local charitable organization. Most of participants deeply appreciated these visits because they were an inspiring learning-by-doing opportunity.
