On 5 September, a delegation of 9 people from South Africa, representing the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa, retailers, manufactures, food service, and government, visited the Banque Alimentaire du Hainaut Occidental et de Mons-Borinage in Tournai.
Jacques Vandenschrik, who is the President of the food bank in Tournai and of the European Food Banks Federation, welcomed the delegation and showed them the food bank’s warehouse and premises. After a brief visit there was a presentation about the activity and the numbers of the food bank, the work on the local territory, the management of the organization and the relations with the authorities, charities and European institution.
The delegation was fascinated by the food bank: they were really interested to better understand the functioning of the food distribution system, legislation complying with civil liability both for food banks and charities, and especially how the 67 volunteers carry on this no-profit organization every day.
At the end, it was a very enriching visit for everyone. We hope that the South African delegation will take the cue from this model to pursue their work in their country.
