Loving food and hating waste: the EU’s contribution


Surplus food that is safe, should, as a priority, be available to people in need.” That’s what Commissioner Andriukaitis declared on 25 September 2018, during the UN General Assembly in New York City.

During his inspiring speech, the Commissioner talked about the EU’s contribution to the Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 and the target of halving food waste by 2030.

What changes has the EU made to tackle food waste since 2016?
Commissioner Andriukaitis explained that significant progress has been made and several food waste prevention actions has been implemented, as part of the EU Circular Economy Action Plan: revised EU waste legislation, EU guidelines on food donations, guidelines on animal feed, work on date marking, etc.
