History
Federation of Polish Food Banks was founded in 1997. Originally there were 4 Food Banks operating in Poland and the idea evolved over time successively covering all of the country regions.
Currently there are 27 Food Banks affiliated with the Federation. Over a million of the needy people benefit from their activities. In 2009 alone, Food Banks transferred approx. 70 thousand tons of food through charities and social institutions.
Daily work in a Food Bank includes establishing and maintaining contact with food suppliers and charities. Several times a year nationwide collections of food are held all over the country, with over 30 thousand volunteers involved in each one. Each of these collections presents unique opportunity to gain commitment to the cause from customers of retail chains. Federation supports the activities of Food Banks, coordinates projects, organizes trainings, ensures the promotion of actions carried out by the Banks and acts on their behalf.
One of the greatest achievements so far was bringing about legal changes which made donations of food exempt from VAT. Social and educational campaigns conducted by the Food Banks constantly receive broad appreciation. The 2009 campaign against the waste of food, carried out under the name "Do not waste food. Trash the old habits", was among those with particularly strong publicity.
